Exhibition article

Just four days now to the exhibition launch of The Living Mountain. Dreaming a Response, at The Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh.

The panel discussion on the 17th February has now sold out, but the exhibition continues until the 31st March, before going on exhibition at The Heriot Gallery Dundas Street, Edinburgh. All details Here

The National have just published an article about the exhibition and talk, which you can view here – Nan Shepherd: Exhibition to mark 130th birthday of famed Scottish environmentalist

“The Living Mountain. Dreaming a Response”

Coming up early next year are two exhibitions featuring the Living Mountain paintings, commissioned by The Folio Society to illustrate their 2021 publication of The Living Mountain, by Nan Shepherd.

As well as paintings, a couple of videos are in the works and I’m very excited about these! I’ve commissioned Atzi Muramatsu (a friend and collaborator since 2013) to create a new piece of music to accompany the videos, which will be released in late January/early February 2023.

Painting has taken a bit more of a back seat while everything gets organised, but happily dates and venues are now confirmed and the series will be on show next year, firstly at The Scottish Poetry Library then at The Heriot Gallery, all details below…

‘Moonscapes: Isle of Harris’ launch

Last night’s launch of Moonscapes: Isle of Harris was a great sucess and most enjoyable. There was a good mix of people, familiar faces and new – many interesting conversations.

Atzi Muramatsu’s performance was magical as always. I will be posting the videos here soon. His response to Harris Moon 4 was suitably sombre and dramatic; it’s quite a dark, stormy and mysterious piece, but my favourite was probably the piece he played in response to a series of smaller works, it was evocative of being on Harris, driving along the winding coast roads watching the landscape unfold in shimmering light.

The Edinburgh organisor of Pecha Kucha, Gordon Duffy, enjoyed the combination of music and paintings and has invited us to present our work at the next Pecha Kucha on the 27th of July, which will be a pleasure (all info on the ‘Pecha Kucha’ link above). I’ll post more about that in a few days.

I’ll be in the Whitespace gallery every day from 12 noon to 6:30pm until Thursday, so if you are in Edinburgh drop in for coffee and a chat! (map and directions etc Here)

Many thanks to Catherine Strang for hosting and sales, to Donald Ferguson for helping with set up (and for his excellent company on the trip to Harris earlier this year) and to Atzi for another excellent performance – this is our fifth year of collaboration and friendship and as Atzi said last night ‘it gets better and better’. Also thanks to Leigh Chorlton (artist and manager of Whitespace) for his friendly support, it’s a lovely space and a delight to show there!

Snowscapes – setting up

P1290652I’m just beginning to set up Snowscapes. That little table in the photo above should be the perfect place to sit and enjoy a glass of mulled wine while contemplating paintings!

My friend had the ingenious idea of making mulled wine in a slow cooker (in the gallery space) and I’m perfecting a recipe of a basic wine and spices syrup that can be added to each new batch of wine.

Below are a few of the paintings, one is new, and some have been worked on a bit more..

The exhibition opens tomorrow 8th Dec’ at 12 noon. It’s on the 8th, 9th and 10th, 12 noon to 8pm daily. At Gayfield Creative Spaces in Gayfield Square Edinburgh. I’ll be serving mulled wine every evening from 6pm

Also, I’m really delighted that Atzi Muramatsu will be creating a cello piece in response to the trilogy below. I’ll be making a short video of music/images and will post it here as soon as I’ve edited it in the next day or so.

Performances at Whitespace exhibition preview

Postcards for the Whitespace exhibition. (don’t forget! – Preview 6-9pm 18th July!)

With just 16 days to finish four large works I’m slightly fretting! But with painting you can only take each day as it comes.

Performances for Whitespace

I’m very happy that two Edinburgh friends will be performing for the Whitespace exhibition preview on the 18th – Atzi Muramatsu and Jennifer Williams

jen

Jennifer is originally from New Jersey, she’s currently Programme Manager for the Scottish Poetry Library but for many years has been a writer, talented poet, and a performer with beautifully atmospheric vocal expression.

A book of Jennifer’s work Locust and Marlin has recently been published (viewable on title link)

222761_10150164579576990_6756518_nAtzi Muramatsu, originally from Japan, is a talented cellist/composer who also wrote the filmscore for BAFTA award-winning film ‘The Making of Longbird’.

For the Whitespace preview, Atzi will be improvising music in response to my paintings  – he improvised at last year’s exhibition, and it was such an imaginative way of perceiving the paintings – which also focused viewers amongst the busyness of a social occasion.

In addition to classical performance, Atzi also plays in the melodious yet moody Lipsync for a Lullaby

It’s just great that Jennifer and Atzi will be performing at the private view, it makes this into a really special event!
