Above, today’s paintings for the Applecross Series which launches at the Limetree Gallery, Bristol on 31st October. The featured painting at the top is ‘Road. Kintail’. Oil on 7×5″ wood.

I’m quite excited about ‘Road. Kintail’ as I love taking photos and sketching while in the car (as a passenger of course!) The road itself provides great perspective and it’s fun trying to sketch or photograph in a moving car. This has that optimistic holiday feel – going somewhere. I wonder if it will appeal to others the same way it does me.

I’m persevering with the oil paints. I love the effects but it’s so messy – I spend half my energy cleaning up at the end of the day!

That’s it for the week. My partner and I are designing a dress this weekend – our new creative adventure – oil-paint-covered hands and expensive fabric do not mix!

A new commission

Above – a private commission for a friend from the US, who kindly commissioned me after seeing some of my paintings. It’s now winging its way to its new home! The buyer of the painting will also use this image for a CD cover featuring his and others music, which I’ll post more about here once he’s received the painting and goes ahead with that!

The theme was dawn rising after a long night – a sense of hope. I based it on my paintings of Ardban earlier this year, hence the painting title- ‘Ardban Light’.

I’ll soon be posting updates on painting progress for a little series I’m creating called Winter Miniatures. The exhibition will feature semi-abstract winter colours in mixed media on 3×3″ wood blocks. More info on the upcoming exhibition at my studio, which launches 8th December 2019 Here

Today’s paintings of the wonderful Sanna Bay in Ardnamurchan. I’m quite happy with the water effect in Sanna Bay (shallow water) which doesn’t really show up in a photo – a bit of underlying texture and colour then a shallow glaze of turquoise with varnish. The painting directly above ‘painted itself’ as they say – always a good thing as it feels like I’m getting into the flow of this series of Ardnamurchan.

The exhibition of these paintings will be at the Resipole Gallery – a three person exhibition which launches on the 17th May. I’m going to take a trip up there for the opening, also for more painting.

The Limetree (owned by Sue Dean and Stephen Edwards) specialises in contemporary Fine Art and Glass and holds regular exhibitions throughout the year. They have two galleries: one in the heart of Bristol city and the other in Long Melford, Suffolk.

They have a particular love of contemporary Scottish artists, and always have a varied selection of their art on show. Ranging from traditional to modern, figurative to abstract, each exhibition is complemented by a selection of individual glass pieces from Britain and Sweden.

Open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, or by appointment.

Resipole Gallery – Website

Resipole Studios is an award-winning fine art gallery with on-site artist studios, located on the West Coast of Scotland.

 

The Resipole hosts an exciting annual programme of exhibitions and workshops of Scottish contemporary art that is both emerging and established. The gallery was launched in 2004 by Andrew Sinclair after a two-year renovation of an agricultural byre.

Since its launch, Resipole Studios continues to present work by artists of many disciplines, with Scotland as their key focus. With many award-winning artists on its roster, the gallery is regarded as one of Scotland’s leading contemporary art spaces and, consequently, in 2016 was selected to show work by the late, American abstract-expressionist, Jon Schueler to mark the centenary of his birth.

Recently Resipole Studios and Fine Art Gallery got in touch to ask if I’d like to exhibit with them, so I’ll be sending some smaller works of the west coast (including those to the right here) then more later this year.

I’m delighted to be showing there as the gallery features the work of some of my favourite Scottish artists including Gillian Murray and Joyce Gunn Cairns, also the paintings of the wonderful Jon Schueler (1916-1992).

It’s not only the quality of artists though, the gallery itself is situated in the wild and beautiful Ardnamurchan peninsula on the west coast. I’ve only travelled there twice as it’s not the most accessible of areas (hence its unspoilt beauty).

 

 

 

As I’ll be staying on the west coast this year for most of July and August I’ll look forward to creating some paintings of the area.

 

 

 

 

Heavy snow (‘the beast from the east’) meant that my plans to visit the Cairngorms didn’t go ahead this Spring, so instead I’ll be painting two large works of Edinburgh in the snow, starting this week.

I’ll also be working on a series for May which explores the landscape and ancient history of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, it’s right on my doorstep and recently I’ve been exploring the history of its ancient wells – I will post more about that soon!
