The October Tide series was made during an artist’s residency at Lagandorain, on the northern tip of the Isle of Iona, in October 2018. Lagandorain House has long provided a base for artists working on the island, continuing a tradition that drew the Scottish Colourists. The residency took place in autumn, when Iona sheds its summer visitors and returns to a wilder, more elemental character. A near-constant Atlantic wind scours the shore at the island’s north end. Worked in mixed media on wood panel, the paintings are concerned with this seasonal energy of tumult and change. Pisces Moon records an evening on the north shore beneath a full moon, the sea held in a slow, opalescent swell of pale green and lavender. The series also explores Iona’s monastic history, including the writings of Adomnán, seventh-century abbot of the island.
